Fuel storage
I have a 300 gal gravity storage tank. It has fuel in it. I didn't put the fuel there and I don't know how old it is, or how much of it there it. I tested the fuel for water and nothing visibly separated. I have been using the fuel for the garden mower tractor and chain saws, etc. I am thinking I can start using it to fill up my truck to empty it out and get some fresh put in, since I don't know the age or anything about the fuel.
How do you store gasoline for long periods? Do you need to have stabilizers added, or what? I am trying to kill this fuel and get a fresh refill, but what is the story on gasoline storage. I am also very interested in what people know on diesel storage as I think there is water or other problems that impact diesel fuel in storage. Thanks! |
Re: Fuel storage
Look up PRI G (gas treatment). As part of looooog term experment, I am still using what's left of gas bought in 1999. I treat it and use it in my wood splitter and chain saw, it works just fine.
http://priproducts.com/pdfs/The%20Ma...20PRI-G%20.pdf Shop around, the price variation is wide. Look for the gallon jugs vs the quarts and or pints, it is usally much less expensive per ounce in the larger container. I can't justify the 55 gallon container though! PRI also make diesel products, be sure to use the Biocide as that keeps the "stuff" from growing in the fuel and plugging your filters. Again shop for price. |
Re: Fuel storage
i would add an octane booster to it as you fill up if it has been there a long time it wil help keep things from gumming up

Re: Fuel storage
I would be a lot more finicky about what gas I put in chain saws than a truck, even if it has a catalytic converter. I only use non-ethanol gasoline in chain saws, which is a little hard to find these days.
The best use for old gasoline would be an older truck without a catalytic converter. I'd add a little acetone to it, about 3 ounces per 10 gallons. |
Re: Fuel storage
Change your fuel filters regularly. As you get lower down into that tank you are likely to encounter more muck also.
